The Importance of Editing

Finishing a manuscript is not the same as finishing a book.

Editing is where much of the real refinement begins.

During this process, repeated sentences may be removed, dialogue sharpened, scenes shortened and inconsistencies corrected.

Sometimes the changes are small.

Sometimes an entire chapter needs to be reconsidered.

The purpose is not to replace the author’s voice. It is to make that voice clearer.

Editing also includes details readers may never consciously notice: consistent spelling, chapter titles, punctuation, spacing and terminology.

When editing works well, it becomes almost invisible.

The reader simply experiences a smoother, stronger story.

That is exactly the point.
